| Sewanee Writers' Series Publishes Tenth Book
A native of Louisiana, Benoit has crafted in All Saints' Day a resonant and provocative novel tracking three generations of the fictional Bueche family of Maringouin, Louisiana. The Bueche's lives are defined by trials and tragedies, which are revealed in a series of self-contained vignettes that chronicle abusive fathers, mothers battling breast cancer, the death of a toddler at the hands of his slower twin, and the regrets and dreams of people who never intended to stay long in the oil and sugarcane fields of Louisiana. All Saints' Day has been welcomed with praise from the New York Times Book Review, which says "a mood of almost sumptuous resignation" drives the novel, making for an "alluring alternative to the sweeping intergenerational saga." Publishers Weekly selected the novel as a Book of the Day, praising All Saints' Day for the ways in which "Cajun heritage and language trail through this first novel like a nostalgic tune." And Kirkus Reviews calls the book a "sharp, poignant debut." Brent Benoit was born in 1974 and raised in south Louisiana. He is a graduate of Loyola University and received his M.F.A. in creative writing from Louisiana State University. He has worked as a writing teacher and a homebuilder in Baton Rouge. Established in 1998, and made possible through the Walter E. Dakin Memorial Fund, the Sewanee Writers' Series is a joint venture between the University of the South and The Overlook Press. |
